The Ryder Cup Format Explained: Four-Ball, Foursomes and Singles

The Ryder Cup format in plain English: two teams, match play, four-ball, foursomes, singles and how points work, plus how to copy it with friends.

The Ryder Cup is golf's most exciting team event. The format is also the easiest way to turn a group of friends into two teams with something to play for.

Here is how it works, and how to borrow it.

The basics

  • Two teams. Equal size.
  • Match play. You play to win holes, not to post the lowest total.
  • Every match is worth one point. A tie, called a halve, is worth half a point to each side.
  • Most points wins the cup.

That is it. Everything else is detail.

What is match play?

In stroke play, you count every shot over the round. In match play, you play hole by hole.

  • Win the hole: you go "1 up".
  • Lose the hole: you go "1 down".
  • Tie the hole: nothing changes.

The match ends when one side is up by more holes than are left. "3 and 2" means a side was 3 up with 2 holes to play.

Match play is forgiving. A triple bogey costs one hole, not your whole round. That is why it suits mixed groups so well.

The three session types

The pro event uses three kinds of matches, called sessions.

Four-ball

Two players per side. Everyone plays their own ball. On each hole, the side's best score counts.

You may hear this called best ball or better ball.

  • Easy to understand.
  • A strong partner can carry you.
  • Pace depends on four balls in play.

Foursomes

Two players per side, sharing one ball. They take turns hitting. One partner tees off on odd holes, the other on even holes.

Often called alternate shot.

  • Tense. Every shot matters to your partner.
  • Fast. Only two balls in play.
  • Hard for groups with a big skill gap.

Singles

One against one. Everyone plays their own ball for their own point.

  • The most dramatic session.
  • Every player is on the spot.
  • Usually saved for the last day.

How the pro event is laid out

In the pro version, each team has 12 players.

A team needs 14.5 points to win outright. At 14 to 14, the team holding the cup keeps it.

How to copy it with friends

You do not need 24 players. You need an even number and two captains.

8 players: two teams of four

First to 4.5 wins. At 4 to 4, decide in advance: shared cup, playoff hole, or last year's winner keeps it.

Why many friend groups swap foursomes for scramble

Foursomes is a brilliant format. It is also hard if your group has a big skill gap. A weak shot leaves your partner in trouble. Some friendships do not survive the back nine.

A two-person scramble is a gentler swap. Both players hit. The team picks the best shot. It keeps the team feel, plays fast and keeps everyone smiling.

Handicaps in team match play

If skill levels vary, give strokes. In match play, strokes go on specific holes, not off a total.

It sounds tricky. It is not. Our guide to handicap strokes in match play explains it in five minutes.

Keeping score

A Ryder Cup-style event has lots of matches going at once. People want to know the overall score at every moment. That is where an app helps.

Look for three things:

  1. Each match scored hole by hole.
  2. A team points total that updates live.
  3. Everyone can see it, in every group.

A few options, from each app's own pages, checked November 2026:
