A Ryder Cup trip lives or dies on its schedule. Too few points, and luck decides it. Too many rounds, and people are exhausted before singles.

Here are ready-made plans for 8 and 12 players. Pick one. Adjust the details. Send it to the group.

Rules of thumb

Before the plans, three rules.

  1. Team formats first. Singles last. Singles is the drama. Save it.
  2. Every player plays every session. Nobody sits out a round that counts.
  3. More points on the last day. It keeps the trailing team alive.

2-day plan, 8 players (3 rounds)

Two teams of four. Two rounds on day one, one on day two.

RoundWhenFormatMatchesPoints
1Day 1 morningFour-ball22
2Day 1 afternoonTwo-person scramble22
3Day 2 morningSingles44
Total8

To win: 4.5 points.

Why it works: the scramble in the afternoon plays fast when legs are tired. Singles on day two puts half the points on the line.

3-day plan, 8 players (4 rounds)

1Day 1 afternoonTwo-person scramble22
2Day 2 morningFour-ball22
3Day 2 afternoonFoursomes or scramble22
4Day 3 morningSingles44
Total10

To win: 5.5 points.

Tip: day one is an arrival day. A scramble is the kindest way to start.

2-day plan, 12 players (3 rounds)

Two teams of six. Three foursomes on the course.

1Day 1 morningFour-ball33
2Day 1 afternoonTwo-person scramble33
3Day 2 morningSingles66
Total12

To win: 6.5 points.

3-day plan, 12 players (4 rounds)

RoundWhenFormatMatchesPoints
1Day 1 afternoonTwo-person scramble33
2Day 2 morningFour-ball33
3Day 2 afternoonFoursomes or scramble33
4Day 3 morningSingles66
Total15

To win: 8 points. A 7.5 to 7.5 tie is possible, so set a tie rule.

4 players: the mini cup

Only four of you? You can still play a cup.

1Four-ball, 2 vs 211
2Scramble, 2 vs 211
3Singles22

Keep the same teams all trip, or switch partners each round and play for individual points. Both are fun.

Tie rules

Decide before the first tee. Pick one.

  • Shared cup. Both teams take a photo with it.
  • Holder keeps it. Like the pro event. Last year's winner keeps it.
  • Playoff. One hole, captain's choice of player. Or a chip-off.

Setting the pairings

Captains set pairings for each team session. A good routine:

  1. Captains swap lineups at dinner the night before.
  2. Each captain writes their pairs in order.
  3. Pair 1 plays pair 1, and so on.

For singles, try a blind draw. Captains write their order. Reveal at the same time. It creates great matchups.

Keeping pace on 36-hole days

Two rounds in a day is a lot. Keep it moving.

  • Book tee times back to back.
  • Pick up when your partner has the hole won.
  • Concede short putts. Agree a gimme distance.
  • Eat lunch fast, then rest.

Scoring all those matches

With 12 players, you might have six matches going at once. You need one place for the team total.

MATCHUPS runs two equal teams of 4, 8 or 12 over one to five rounds on iPhone and Apple Watch, with a live lock-screen scoreboard. It scores Match, Best Ball, Scramble and more. Hosting is free with 4 players and a one-time $49.99 for 8 or 12.

If your trip has more than five rounds, more than 12 players, or anyone on Android, MATCHUPS is not the right fit. CupTracker and Golf GameBook Reds vs Blues both list up to 6 rounds, and Golf GameBook runs on Android. See our Ryder Cup app comparison.
